Poverty

I've said it before and I'll say it again. America says I'm poor.

True, I'm hovering right on the poverty line.
True, I've visited some food pantries when pickings were slim at home.
True, I've been on Food Stamps.
True, I've been on Medicaid.
True, I've supported myself and my two children on about $1000/month.
True, I've, at one time, bought all our clothes secondhand.
True, I've fed my kids their fair share of beans and rice, cause it's cheap.

And yet.

I've never been without food in my house.
I've been given the opportunity to work.
I've never gone hungry.
I've always had something to wear.
I've even always had to car to get me where I need to go.
I've never had to eat a dirt cookie.

So with that in mind.

I will make a difference.
I will look beyond myself and my own circumstances.
I will not turn away from the ugly face of poverty.
I will remember what it feels like.
I will model compassion to my children.
I will do all that I can through the POWER of Christ in me.

One way I make a difference is through child sponsoring. Find out more about how you can make a difference in the life of a child living in poverty by visiting Compassion.

Hi Shanda,
This is one powerful post. I'm very moved by your writing. I'm even more moved by your deep love for Christ. He has given you much. I love that you aren't letting the culture define you. Thanks for sharing what you do, what a difference you are making for the Kingdom.

I know your words well. I am glad you are so strong to know life is more than money. It is happiness sharing and caring.
Be blessed my friend.
